Andre "Alemao" Vasconcellos
HEAD PROFESSOR | 6TH DEGREE
Professor Andre “Alemao” Vasconcellos is the founder and head professor of Carlson Gracie South Bay. With decades of experience in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, he has dedicated his life to teaching, competing, and developing champions both on and off the mats.
His journey began at the age of 14 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, when his family moved to Copacabana Beach, directly across the street from the legendary Carlson Gracie Headquarters. Encouraged by his stepfather, Andre walked into the academy and began training, quickly developing a passion for Jiu-Jitsu that would shape the rest of his life.
Competition became a central part of Andre's early years. Through years of dedicated training and competing, he developed his skills and established himself within the sport. By the time he earned his purple belt, he had discovered another passion: teaching. He began coaching and soon earned recognition for his ability to develop successful competitors in Brazil.
In 2012, Andre fulfilled his dream of opening Carlson Gracie South Bay in Torrance, California. What started with no students has grown into one of the South Bay's established Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academies, known for its strong competition team and close-knit community.
Under his guidance, the academy has helped develop accomplished athletes, including IBJJF European Champion Will Wilson, Kauan Barboza, Alexander Molinaro, MMA veteran Albert Morales and more.
Today, Professor Andre continues to dedicate himself to the academy, fostering an environment where beginners, families, and experienced competitors train together. His commitment to technical excellence, discipline, and community remains at the heart of Carlson Gracie South Bay.
